P226 is a full-sized pistol chambered 9x19mm, .40S&W, .357SIG and .22LR Cartridges. It is essentially the same basic design of the P220 Pistol, but developed to use higher capacity, double stack magazine in place of the single stack magazine of the P220 pistol (P220 pistol only available in .45ACP nowadays).
P226 is designed for entry into the XM9 Service Pistol Trials (Also known as Joint Service Small Arms Program, JSSAP), which held by the US Army in 1984 on behalf of the US Armed Force to find a replacement for the M1911 Pistol. Only the Itlaian M92F and P226 satisfactorily completed the trial and P226 lost the contract because of the higher package price than the M92F. However, the US Navy SEALs chose to adopt P226 and started using in the 1980s.
