CAR-15 was a M16 rifle-based firearm in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is a Military Weapons System contains rifle, carbine, assault rifle with heavy barrel, submachine type, commando type and a concept survival type. Its name was used for carbine-length M16 and AR-15 variants before M4 was developed.

CAR-15 Submachine Gun (SMG) is a compact weapon for use by special forces and vehicle crewmen, it is also the first M16 / AR-15 made with a retractable buttstock. About 50 CAR-15 SMGs were made and most of them were issued to Navy SEALS and Army Special Forces, also it was mainly assembled from spare parts because it never went into full production.
