M653 and M655 are the products under the development of the M16A1 Carbine with a 14.5 inch long barrel in early 1970s, which was compatible with the existing carbine-length gas system and allowed for the mounting of a standard M16 bayonet. Despite having a longer barrel, it would not be less compact than the previous carbines. M653 comes with a retractable buttstock which M655 comes with a fixed one. Although M653 and M655 was tested and used by a small group of US Navy and US Army, both model has not officially adopted by US Army. However, thousands M653 was given to Israeli Defense Force (IDF) during the Yom Kippur War as part of Operation Nickel Grass. These M653 was called “CAR-15” by IDF, continue in use with them until they replace with 9mm Micro Tavor (MTAR 21).
