The AK-12 is the latest entry in the legendary Kalashnikov rifle series. It was designed and developed in 2011 to replace the AK-74M and the AK-100 rifle series. However, the Russian Defense Ministry chose not to adopt the AK-12 due to millions of AK-74 rifles still in stockpile. In 2017, the AK-12 is being trialed for introduction into the Russian military, competing against the V.A. Degtyarev Plant(ZiD) A-545 with the intent of eventually phasing out the AK-74M.

At first, the AK-12 didn't have a designation for the different calibers until 2016, the rifles finally received its own designation, the version chambered in 5.45 x 39mm as AK-12 and the version chambered in 7.62 x 39mm as AK-15.

Also, there are TWO versions of AK-12, which are the 2012 Prototype Version (commonly seen in video games) and the 2016 Version. Appearances are different between both rifles, like the 2012 Version has a brand new designed receiver and selector which features Semi-Auto, 3-Rounds Burst and Full-Auto and the 2016 Version switched back to the classic AK receiver. The stock on the 2012 Version is a folding and retractable stock and the 2016 Veriosn has an AR style stock and stock tube.
