AKM (Russian: Автомат Калашникова Модернизированный, “"Kalashnikov modernized automatic rifle" in English) is a upgrade version of the AK-47 Rifle developed in the 1950s and introduced into Soviet Army in 1959. As an upgrade version of AK-47, AKM feature a steel stamping receiver instead of the milled steel receiver, which made AKM's weight was reduced by 1KG and increase the full auto fire accuracy. AKM feed the same ammo which AK-47 used, means it fit all box magazine of AK-47, even the 40 round loing magazine and 75 round drum magazine from the RPK.

AKMS is the main variant of the AKM rifle. “S” means Skladnoy in Russian (English: Folding), which was eqipped with a rivetted steel pressings under folding stock similar to AK-47S Rifle.
